If you've never been to the Children's Sleepover, here's a taste of what you've been missing... By
8:00 it was starting to get dark. The glow of kid’s flashlights in the
woods competed with the flicker of the fireflies. About Suddenly, out of the darkness, the Gorilla of Beachcomber’s ghost jumped out! It ran behind us and all of us started chasing it. We chased it up next to the pool (while Joe shouted, “No running by the pool”) and it ran through the picnic area and went up to the playground. From there it ran into the grove and jumped the creek. The kids caught up to it by the bonfire. One of the kids tripped it, another knocked it down. Then all of us piled on top of it. We pulled off the mask and it was... Sorry, only the kids at the sleepover know. After the capture of the gorilla, we all had various types of donuts and juice. By now it was close to 10:00, and we were free to do what we wanted to do for an hour. Some of us played Flashlight Tag, some played Ultimate Frisbee. We played Capture the Flashlight. (It’s just like Capture the Flag, but you can’t see a flag at night, so you use a lit flashlight). Then we went swimming again. It was interesting to swim in a lit pool under a dark sky. At 11:00, the lifeguards closed the pool and I joined my friends on the basketball court to play cards. Even though we were quiet, Joe came over and told us, “Lights out!”, so we got into our sleeping bags. Even though we tried to stay awake by quietly talking, most of us quickly fell asleep. In the morning, when we awoke, it was freezing cold. Now we knew why the list of suggested sleepover clothing included sweatshirts. I was glad to have mine! Then we went into the snackbar pavilion; pancakes & bacon were served for breakfast. It was a great way to end a great night and day at Beachcomber. Copyright © 2001
